Nominee: Philipe Mambakasa, Matalan, Wood Green
A security guard with ASEL since June 2021, Philipe currently works at Matalan in Wood Green and consistently receives excellent feedback for his commitment and professionalism.
Philipe was awarded a commendation in 2024 when it transpired he had taken the time to learn sign language in order to communicate with customers and staff members with deafness or hearing difficulties. Furthermore, a regular customer at the store who teaches British Sign Language in the local community pointed out to Philipe’s manager how fantastic Philipe is with customers.
When asked about his decision to learn sign language, Philipe’s response demonstrated truly inspirational levels of initiative and empathy as well as an impressive can-do attitude. He explained he felt so bad when he was unable to communicate with deaf customers and colleagues, and so decided to take action. Philipe received a mention in the staff newsletter but we feel he deserves special recognition for the remarkable lengths he has gone to in order to ensure he can communicate with everyone, regardless of their needs or hearing abilities.
By going above and beyond his job description, Philipe has demonstrated that security personnel can play a pivotal role in fostering community spirit and inclusivity. His actions reflect a deep understanding of the diverse needs of customers and a genuine desire to serve all members of the community equally.
Philipe’s story is a powerful reminder of the positive impact one individual can have when they combine empathy with action. His dedication to breaking down communication barriers and ensuring equal treatment for all customers makes him an outstanding candidate for the Community Heroes category in the Retail Risk ‘Pride of Retail Risk’ awards.
